Among the barrels, we guard the heart of our land

Among the barrels, we guard the heart of our land

Where wine comes to life and tells the story of the land

Simon di Brazzan, has abandoned the use of chemical treatments for more than 25 years in favor of natural practices and products such as Bordeaux mixture and sulfur.

In the vineyard, sustainable integrated agriculture control practices such as sexual confusion are used, and the only organic insecticides are natural pyrethrum and bacillus thuringiensis.

To balance grape production with respect to the vegetative mass and to have qualitatively better productions from the point of view of sugars, acids and polyphenols, green pruning interventions such as bunch thinning and defoliation near the bunches are performed.

When it comes to fertilization, compost produced from cow manure, grape marc and manure is preferred, as well as all-natural algae-based foliar fertilizers. Respecting nature and taking care of the vines is the real secret to making wine that is correct and an expression of the land of origin. Another major focus of Simon di Brazzan lies in the process of harvesting the grapes only when the seed is ripe, a choice that generates well-being for the plant and improves quality: it is the color of the grape seed that tells us at what point the ripening is! Harvesting is exclusively manual with grape sorting, less invasive and respectful of the plant.

The rhythm of biodynamic

Sustainable resource management and a holistic approach

For the past thirteen years, Simon di Brazzan has been tending the land relying on biodynamic methods, following Sowing Calendars based on stellar, planetary and lunar motions.

These are an indispensable working tool to create a balanced system whose main purpose is the vivification of the land with rotations and intercropping, green manure, defense means that are not dangerous to living things, with a greater appreciation of livestock, respect for wildlife and thus with the restoration of a natural balance.

A compost produced from cow manure and other wastes such as grape marc, manure and leaf fertilizers made from algae, which are completely natural, is used as manure .

The defense of biodiversity

Environmentally sustainable vineyards

Biodiversity refers to the whole variety of living organisms and the complex ecosystems that, all together, coexist in the biosphere, and its protection is fundamental to the well-being of the planet and the creatures that inhabit it, including human beings.

To live, humans feed and breathe, and it is our obligation to feed all microorganisms living in the earth because, from their increase and activity, important substances are derived that make plant nutrition more complete.

At Simon di Brazzan’s, each season tickles the stimulus for biodiversity.

In the fall, soils are tilled in alternating rows, compost is spread and green manure is sown, and in mid-May the many grasses thus grown are mowed and buried, a technique that improves soil fertility and allows all soil organisms to live and release valuable substances that help the vines to be stronger and more resilient.

It should never be forgotten that a strong, well-nourished plant reacts positively to any stresses or adverse weather situations, while also improving the ability of the soil itself to retain water and make it available when needed.

Cultivating to enhance

One of the first conditions of happiness is that the bond between man and nature is not broken.

Organic Certification

Environmentally sustainable vineyards

Since the 2016 harvest, our vineyards have been conducted according to European Regulation 203/2012 of organic farming since 2013.

European legislation (EC Reg. 848/18) guarantees the conformity of organically produced products at all stages of the production chain, from the land to the bottle.

For our winery, organic certification represents not so much a milestone as an official confirmation of the daily commitment and philosophy that has always guided Simon di Brazzan‘s work: an instinctive respect for nature and a constant dedication to sustainable quality.

Ecomethod

Ecomethod is the method using foliar nutrition. The high CSC of the leaf allows the plant to absorb a large amount of nutrients.

This ensures greater respect for the environment through a strong reduction in fertilizers applied to the soil, which results in lower CO2 emissions to the atmosphere, while maintaining quantity and quality of production.
