Terroir

A borderland

Soil is the first ingredient in our organic wines

Simon di Brazzan is located in the province of Gorizia, specifically in Brazzano di Cormons, where the wine vocation is mixed with the DNA of the territory.

We occupy a valuable 17-hectare hilly area between DOC Collio and Isonzo, divided between Italy and Slovenia, stretching between the Isonzo River and the Iudrio River, bordered to the south by the Friulian plain, to the north by the hamlets of Mernico, Cobaler and Lasizze, and bordering the Natisone valleys to the north.
Our territory has a variety of soils that can be divided into two main types: autochthonous and allochthonous.

Native soils are those that have formed directly in the place where they are found, shaped over millennia by local environmental conditions.

In contrast, allochthonous soils originate in different areas and are subsequently transported by water, then deposited in new places.

These soils are particularly rich in clays, often from moraine hills, and are influenced by recent alluvial processes

This complexity contributes to the uniqueness of each vineyard in the area, giving distinctive characteristics to the grapes grown there and, consequently, to the wines made from them.

The relationship between soil and vine thus becomes a key element in the expression of terroir through its products.

The nature of the parent rock, along with the stratification of the soil, plays a key role in the soil’s ability to absorb water and provide essential mineral elements for vine growth.

Climate defines the climax of each vintage

Wine that comes from the breath of the land

Time flows, seasons follow one another, and each vintage brings with it changes that affect the harvest and the final product.

The vine seems to have found its ideal environment here: an area where the Alps protect the gentle, sunny hills that open to the south to welcome the beneficial influences of the sea and the warm, humid Sirocco.

The winds that blow from the east, such as the cool and dry Bora, and the altitude of our lands also contribute and create the perfect conditions for growing vines.

It is in this balance between climate, soil and geographic location that a unique product rich in history takes shape: our organic wine, an authentic expression of the land and its agricultural tradition.

Our varieties

Brazzan character between autochthonous and international

The two indigenous grape varieties are Istrian Malvasia and Friulano, varieties that have found an ideal habitat in this terroir due to the climate, marly soils, and local wine culture, which have shaped its unique characteristics.

We also raise international vines of Pinot grigio, Pinot blanc, Sauvignon, Traminer, Cabernet franc and Merlot, which are able to express themselves unmistakably here.
